DRAGON LEADER
TRAINED BY CLIVE COX
2021 Chesnut Gelding by El Kabeir ex Sweet Dragon Fly - Clive Cox
KVT III
Dragon Leader enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2023, winning all three of his starts as a two-year-old. His victories included an impressive success at Salisbury and a dominant performance in the Goffs UK Harry Beeby Premier Yearling Stakes at York. He capped his juvenile campaign by landing the Listed Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar, finishing the year unbeaten with earnings in excess of £300,000 and establishing himself as one of the most exciting young sprinters of his generation.
He is by El Kabeir, a US Graded Stakes winner and son of Scat Daddy, and is bred from a pedigree rich in speed. El Kabeir’s progeny include high-class performers such as Masekela and Harrow, while Dragon Leader’s dam, Sweet Dragon Fly, was a winner in the UK before achieving Black-Type status in California. She is a daughter of Sweet Cecily, winner of the Listed Bosra Sham Stakes, further strengthening an already high-quality pedigree.
Purchased for £45,000 at the Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale, Dragon Leader immediately caught our attention, as well as that of trainer Clive Cox, thanks to his physical presence and evident potential. His blend of Oasis Dream and Kodiac bloodlines underpins his natural speed and precocity—qualities he displayed in abundance during his outstanding juvenile season.
His three-year-old campaign, however, proved frustrating and fell short of the high expectations set by his stellar debut season. Despite this, he still provided us with memorable days at some of racing’s biggest meetings. Following gelding in the autumn of 2024 and pre-season wind surgery, he returned to training ahead of the 2025 campaign with renewed enthusiasm and hopes of a resurgence. After making his seasonal reappearance at Newbury in May 2025, it was clear he was still not quite right. Subsequent investigations revealed that Dragon Leader had sustained a hairline fracture to his pelvis, explaining his below-par performances.
Following a lengthy period of rehabilitation and recovery, he has now returned to action on the all-weather, finishing a close third on his most recent start. We are hopeful it will not be long before he returns to winning ways back on the turf. Given his proven class and the time he has been afforded to fully recover, we believe he can recapture the form that once marked him out as one of the most exciting young prospects in training.
