*2024 Minzaal ex Summer House (SHARES AVAILABLE)
HARRY CHARLTON
2024 Bay Colt by Minzaal ex Summer House - Harry Charlton
The Sandpiper Syndicate
Our new purchase is a classy and very athletic-looking son of first-crop sire Minzaal, out of the Lope De Vega mare Summer House. We secured the colt for 72,000 guineas, and you can click on the link below to watch a video of him.
He was originally catalogued for the Goffs Orby Sale back at the end of September, but after spiking a temperature at the sale he was unable to go through the ring. Fortunately, we had already seen him before he became unwell and liked him a great deal. That opinion was very much reaffirmed yesterday, and both Harry and ourselves are delighted to have been able to buy him.
He is by Owen Burrows’ dual Group 1-winning sprinter Minzaal, whose first yearlings have made a strong impression across the autumn sales. His dam, Summer House, is a daughter of the outstanding sire and broodmare sire Lope De Vega, out of a Listed-winning sister to Epsom Derby runner-up Walk In The Park—now a top National Hunt sire. The grandam, Classic Park, won the Irish 1,000 Guineas, so this is a pedigree of real depth and quality.
He is a lovely colt who looks likely to be a second-half-of-the-season two-year-old, with all the scope to develop into an even better three-year-old, perhaps over a mile.
Luke Lillingston commented: “Hey, good looking! Having secured a lovely group of yearlings who have proved extremely popular, our last purchase of the year might just be the best looking of the lot. Good looks don’t guarantee anything, but this boy has plenty of other things to recommend him. Firstly, he is from the first crop of Minzaal, Europe’s highest-rated sprinter of 2022 and, according to Owen Burrows, much the fastest horse he has ever trained. His dam is by Lope De Vega—the leading stallion in the world this year by black-type horses and an increasingly influential broodmare sire. Minzaal is by Mehmas who, when crossed with a Lope De Vega mare, produced the outstanding Persian Force—the sire of the great chestnut yearling you saw at our yearling parade. Additionally, he comes from the highly respected breeder John Tuthill of Owenstown Stud, from where such stars as Gordon Lord Byron, Excelebration, Persuasive, and Art Power have emerged. I’m very confident you will like what you see.”

HARRY CHARLTON
BECKHAMPTON, WILTSHIRE
Harry Charlton is the latest to join the Kennet Valley roster of trainers, based at the magnificent Beckhampton Stables near Marlborough. As the eighth trainer to operate at Beckhampton since the 1820s, Harry is committed to continuing the legacy of one of the country’s most esteemed training establishments, benefiting from some of the finest gallops available. All seven of his predecessors trained classic winners—a benchmark Harry and his experienced team are determined to match. He places great emphasis on clear communication with owners and understands the growing importance of digital technology and social media in modern horseracing. His aim is to build on the achievements of his father and carry Beckhampton’s success into the future. Before embarking on his training career, Harry gained invaluable experience in the racing industry. Between school and university, he spent time with the veterinary team at Rossdales in Newmarket and then over a year with Charlie Appleby in the Godolphin operation, working in both Dubai and England. Having lived at Beckhampton all his life, Harry grew up riding and watching horses train, giving him a lifelong connection to the sport. Harry returned to Beckhampton in 2014 after five years in London and immediately became part of a remarkable period of success. He witnessed the triumphant return of Al Kazeem from stud, claiming another Group 1 victory, and enjoyed the later achievements of the exceptional mare Thistle Bird. Soon after, Quest for More and Decorated Knight shone on the track, followed by top-level successes from Time Test, Headman, Quadrilateral, and Aspetar. In 2023, while in a training partnership with his father, Harry celebrated his first Royal Ascot winner with Thesis. That momentum has continued with Harry at the helm in 2024, a year that began spectacularly with victories in the Esher Cup, the Gordon Richards Stakes, the London Gold Cup, and the Golden Gates at Royal Ascot—all within the first three months of the season.
