Calendar Girl quickly established herself as one of the most exciting juvenile fillies in training last season with a series of outstanding performances. She made a sparkling debut at Newbury, followed by a brave effort under a penalty at Epsom, before producing a scintillating display to land the prestigious £300,000 Weatherbys Scientific 2-Y-O Stakes at Doncaster. She then enhanced her reputation further by adding the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes to her record, finishing her first season as the highest-earning two-year-old filly in training in Britain and Ireland, with prize money and GBB bonuses totalling over £250,000.
Purchased for just 45,000gns at the 2024 Tattersalls Book 2 Yearling Sale, Calendar Girl represents tremendous value as well as exceptional talent. She is by the brilliant young stallion Advertise, a lightning-fast triple Group 1 winner whose victories included the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. Despite his oldest runners being only three, Advertise has already made a striking impact at stud, siring multiple Group winners in 2024, including Andrew Balding’s Gimcrack Stakes hero Cool Hoof Luke, underlining his growing reputation as a source of top-class speed.
Her dam, Plucky Lass, is by the elite broodmare sire Medaglia d’Oro, one of the rare stallions to have produced more than 100 stakes winners both as a sire and as a broodmare sire. Calendar Girl therefore combines a pedigree rich in speed, class and stamina with an outstanding physical presence and attitude, attributes that have been evident from the very beginning of her racing career.
Already a stakes winner and one of the most accomplished fillies of her generation, Calendar Girl has firmly established herself as a filly of the highest calibre. With her natural speed, toughness and proven ability at Pattern level, she heads into the new season as a hugely exciting prospect, and we very much look forward to seeing what this exceptional filly can achieve next.
OWEN BURROWS
LAMBOURN, BERKSHIRE
CALENDAR GIRL
Owen Burrows has quickly established himself among Britain’s leading trainers since taking out his licence in 2016, having previously honed his skills under David Nicholson and Sir Michael Stoute. He has trained high-class performers including Hukum, Alflaila, Anmaat and Minzaal and consistently maintains a strong strike rate. Kennet Valley has enjoyed early success with Owen since he joined our trainer roster in recent years, most notably through the outstanding Calendar Girl. She earned just shy of £300,000 in her first season last year as a two-year-old, including victories in the Weatherbys Scientific Two-Year-Old Trophy and the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes. He also formerly trained Fair Wind, a four-time winner who earned just under £100,000 in prize money before retiring. Owners are always made welcome when visiting his base at Farncombe Down Stables, just outside Lambourn.
